PAULOWNIA - THE CO2 STORAGE TREE

The paulownia tree (also bluebell tree) originally comes from Asia and was first brought to Europe by the Würzburg naturalist Philipp Franz von Siebold in the mid-19th century. He named the tree after his Dutch client and Queen Anna Pavlovna, a daughter of the tsar. The plant quickly became a popular ornamental tree in imperial gardens and parks throughout Europe.

The enormous CO2 storage capacity is particularly interesting. Due to its very rapid growth, Paulownia can store many times more CO2 than conventionally used forest stands.

The heart-shaped leaves reach a diameter of up to one meter in the first few years and later become smaller again.

The blue-violet bell-shaped flowers bloom for the first time in their third year and are particularly impressive thanks to their large panicles.

FEATURES OF THE PAULWNIA TREE

Infoloresence:
  • Formed in the axils of leaves in late summer to fall, overwinters and blooms in spring.
  • Erect thyrsus about 35 cm long
  • Hermaphrodite flowers with violet to white coloring
  • Pollination by pollen and nectar eating insects
  • Fruits from the age of four to five years
  • Great for bees
Leaves:
  • Young trees have large leaves, up to 1 m in diameter
  • Leaves with smooth or wavy edges become smaller and smaller with age
  • Leaf mass remains the same in all stages
Rapid growth:
  • Reaches a diameter of 35 cm and a height of about 15 m within 10 - 12 years
Root:
  • Up to 8 m deep
  • Are heavily influenced by water and nutrient availability
Precipitation:
  • Tree sprouts again after felling
  • Can be harvested up to 5 times after planting

LOCATION FACTORS

  • Very adaptable
  • Prefers 500 to 2600 mm of precipitation
  • Also tolerates dry periods
  • Plant parts and young plants that are not yet mature are particularly sensitive to early and late frost
  • Prefers deep, well-drained soils with a high proportion of sand and peat
  • Clay and sandy soils are not suitable
  • Waterlogging will not be tolerated
  • Needs lots of light
  • Sensitive to accompanying vegetation

FAST GROWING HYBRID TREE

  • "Hybrid" plants only form seeds that are not capable of germination. In this way, the spread can be controlled and native plants are not displaced.

  • Since no plants from seed or root origin are generally used for plantation cultivation, the trees cultivated here are exclusively sterile hybrids.

  • Under optimal conditions, Paulownia trees can reach a height of 15 to 20 m within 10 to 12 years with a trunk diameter of up to 45 cm.

  • They do not need any chemical pesticides and only need to be supplied with organic or mineral fertilizers.

  • Paulownia wood is light, stable and versatile. After felling, the plant will sprout again. The tree is therefore only planted once, but can be harvested up to five times.

This is pure sustainability!

GROWING PROCEDURES

planting date
  • end of May 2021
  • after the last frost
planting distance
  • 3.5 by 3.5 meters in a triangular bond
  • Soil cultivation between the rows is therefore possible
  • however, the tree also experiences enough competition from its neighbors to encourage upright growth
pruning
  • after a year
  • The shoot of the tree is cut back directly on the ground.
  • In the vegetation period that follows, the tree sprouts from the rootstock again and forms a straight, branch-free trunk
further care
  • In subsequent years, the tree must be trimmed of side buds to encourage straight trunk
  • At an early stage, the buds can be easily removed with your fingertips

ORIGIN

  • Botanical name: Paulowniaceae
  • 7 different types
  • Originally from central and western China
  • Plantation cultivation in China, USA, New Zealand, Australia, southern Europe
  • Used as an ornamental tree in Europe since the mid-19th century
  • Plantation cultivation in Germany for about 12 years
