CLIMATE PROTECTION - DIRECT ON SITE

In the spring of last year, Stefan Bonsels' farm planted around 4,000 paulownia trees on an area of five hectares in Neukirchen-Vluyn/Niep with the aim of doing something good for the environment and developing CO2 certificates for this area.

The cooperation between the Bonsels farm, the TROX GROUP and the bio innovation park Rheinland e.V. developed from this basic idea.

THE PLANTATION

The paulownia plantation in Neukirchen-Vluyn/Niep is a joint project of Stefan Bonsels' farm, the international TROX GROUP from Neukirchen-Vluyn and the bio innovation park Rheinland e. V. and its scientific network partner.

5 HECTARES = 10 FOOTBALL FIELDS CULTIVATION AREA

In spring 2021, 4,000 tree seedlings were planted on an area of 5 hectares. By the time they are first felled in 2033, the trees will reach a height of around 15 m and a trunk diameter of around 45 cm.

Since the plants then sprout again, one speaks of "harvest".

THE IDEAL PLACE

Paulownia trees like nutrient-rich, moderately dry soil with good root penetration. Here with us on the Lower Rhine, you should therefore feel right at home.

After the first year, the plants are pruned back, which strengthens their roots and leads to a proud growth of up to 4 m in the second year. Completely without chemical pesticides or artificial fertilizers!

TRANSPARENT CO2 CERTIFICATIONS FROM HOME

Many CO2 certificates come from Africa or South America. But why wander into the distance when the good is so close?

After all, Paulownia trees bind so much carbon dioxide with their rapid growth that the first certificates can be issued in the second year of growth. Regional and transparent!

This is exactly what TROX is promoting with this project.

THE BLUE WONDER

  • One of the fastest growing tree species in the world (3-4 m/year)
  • A 2 - 3 year old tree stores about 36 kg of CO2
  • A Paulownia tree stores around 46 times more CO2 than an oak
  • 40,000 kg CO2 storage per hectare and year
  • Total amount of CO2 stored on 5 hectares after 12 years: approx. 2,500,000 kg
